Phone connectivity is the first thing you'll need on arrival. The cheapest setup isn't always the best โ€” here's how to get it right from day one.

eSIM Before You Arrive

Nomad, Airalo, and Saily all offer Thailand eSIMs that activate before you land. Around $10 for a week, $20 for a month. Set up before your flight and you'll have data the moment your plane lands.

eSIM is the fastest, no-friction option for arrival. Don't bother with an airport SIM kiosk โ€” they're slower and more expensive.

Local SIM โ€” AIS, True, dtac

AIS has the best coverage and signal in Bangkok and travel destinations. True is competitive in central Bangkok. dtac is usually cheapest but coverage thins outside major cities.

Monthly plans run 300โ€“600 THB for unlimited data. You can usually convert a tourist SIM to a postpaid plan once you have a long-term visa.

Home Internet

AIS Fibre, True Online, and 3BB are the three big home internet providers. 1Gbps fiber plans run 600โ€“1,200 THB/month โ€” fast, cheap, reliable.

Most condos have one or two pre-wired providers. Check before you sign a lease if you work from home and need a specific provider.

Public Wi-Fi

Coffee shops, malls, and most restaurants have free Wi-Fi. Quality varies wildly. Coworking spaces (The Hive, JustCo) have proper business-grade Wi-Fi for serious work.

Don't rely on public Wi-Fi for work that involves sensitive data without a VPN.

VPN โ€” Worth It?

VPNs are legal in Thailand and widely used by expats. ProtonVPN, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN all work well. Useful for accessing US streaming, US banking sites, and general privacy.

Streaming services geo-block from Thailand โ€” Netflix, Hulu, US sports โ€” so a VPN is the workaround.

Keeping Your US Number

Google Voice, Hushed, and TextNow let you keep a US number for verifications and family contact. Many US services require a US number for SMS auth โ€” set this up before you leave.

Don't deactivate your US carrier line without a plan. Some apps lock to your phone number permanently.

Final Thoughts

eSIM on arrival, local SIM within the first week, fiber at home, US number forwarded. Get this stack right and the rest of your digital life works smoothly.
